NEWS BRIEFS 4/27/2013

STARTING at 7 a.m yesterday, the lanes of the Mandaue-Mactan bridge to the Fernan bridge at M.L. Quezon Highway were closed to motorists to give room to stallholders and entertainment shows for Lapu-Lapu City's Kadaugan sa Mactan.

A two-way lane will be open to motorists until 5 p.m only after which it will be closed until 12 midnight.

An alternate route will be open at the Matumbo road heading to the Mactan Cebu International airport and to northern barangays.

Those needing parking space may use the space at the back of Gaisano Island Mall.

There are 11 stages for live entertainment and several stalls lined up to provide food and drinks.

At the Mactan Shrine last night, people watched the pre-battle ritual musical drama held prior to the re-enactment of the historical “Kadaugan sa Mactan.”

Kadaugan sa Mactan celebrates the victory of native chieftain Lapu-Lapu who fought off the forces of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan on April 27, 1521.

A highlight of last year’s Kadaugan sa Mactan was the slaughter of a pig as an offering by natives to their anito.

Actress-singer and animal rights activist Geneva Cruz, who portrayed Reyna Bulakna, was shocked after witnessing the slaughter firsthand.

At 9 a.m today, it will be actors Polo Ravales and Troy Montero who will play the roles of Lapu-Lapu and Magellan respectively while Yam Concepcion will assume as Reyna Bulakna.

Xavier Palanca, director of the Kadaugan event, said the reenactment will be different from previous presentations. /Correspondent Norman V. Mendoza

THE Cebu Equine Owners Breeders Sportsman Association (Ceobsa) opened its annual horse show and competition for the first time at the South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu City yesterday afternoon.

“Cebu City is fortunate for partnering with organizers of the 16-year-old horse show,” said Dr. Alice Utlang, chief of Cebu City Hall's Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries.

The competition features three events: the oval race obstacle race and barrel race which starts at 9 a.m. until afternoon today.

Horse associations from Negros Oriental, Bohol, Malaybalay City in Bukidnon province, Cagayan de Oro and Davao joined the event, a project of suspended Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.

Ceobsa founder Anton Quisumbing said the SRP in Cebu city has been their dream venue for the event which he hoped would help attract and develop a wider public following.

The event is in partnership with Cebu City Mayor’s Office, Cebu City Sports Commission and the Cebu City Tourism Commission.

The awarding ceremony will be at Parkmall in North Reclamation Area in Mandaue city at 7 p.m. tomorrow. /Correspondent Tweeny M. Malinao
